This position would also support Basicand Translational Pain Research within the Department ofAnesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine(ACCM).Applicants should haveexperienceworking with animals in a researchenvironment.Position assists with the technical aspects oflaboratory studies and experiments including documentation andpreparation of materials, performing physiological studies onanimals, administering agents and conducting molecular workdesigned to pain research.Specific Duties andResponsibilities:Under the generalsupervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, theResearch Specialist will:Will be trained prior to work with supervisionand guidance from the principal investigators of thegroup.Perform laboratory tasks and complete routineassays following common or established protocols andprocedures.Monitor inventory levels,orders materials and supplies in accordance with establishedpolicies and procedures. Interacts with vendors and obtainsquotes.Maintain lab equipment – laboratory and surgicalrecovery areas clean and orderly.Use of image analysis software to analyze imagesof tissue sections.Operate lab computer,knowledge of basic software applications including spreadsheetswith Excel.Maintains complete andorganized records/reports.Techniques of interestinclude any of the followings, but are not limited to, maintainingtransgenic mouse colony and genotyping, basic animal surgerytechnique in rodents (e.g., nerve ligation, catheter implantation),behavioral pharmacology (drug delivery), animal behavioral testingtechniques related to pain, addiction and anxiety, cell culture,western blot, real-time PCR, immunocytochemistry, Ca2+ imaging andother cell imaging techniques Work requires basic use of scientificmethods, procedures and techniques.MinimumQualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology,chemistry or related field. One year of related laboratory orveterinary experience. Master’s degree, with related graduateresearch, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted bythe JHU equivalency formula.JHU EquivalencyFormula: 30 undergraduate degree credits(semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute forone year of experience.PreferredQualifications:Experience in working with experimentalanimal models.Additional Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities:Basic understanding of theory behind theexperiments is needed.Basic analytical skills to implement assignedprojects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needingspecial attention.Follow approved experimental protocols, healthrecords need to be maintained in accordance with AALACguidelines.PhysicalRequirements:No allergy to live animals(rodent)Sitting, standing andwalking for extended period.
