Snapchat and Jeff Koons Turn AR into ART

first_img Snapchat, it’s not just for teen sex anymore. The road’s been hard but Snap Inc. has invested heavily in turning their super popular but super ephemeral messaging service into a modern tech institution. So put on your Snapchat Spectacles and take a look at the company’s newest initiative: augmented reality collaborations with artist Jeff Koons. The announcement is still technically unofficial, but the clues are all pretty obvious. If you go to there’s a mysterious clock ticking down to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel’s talk at Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit. What could Spiegel be talking about? Well if you set your computer clock one day into the future (or 8,640 10-second snaps) the page will then display famous Koons artwork like the $58 million metal statue “Balloon Dog” as well as the phrase “Artwork All Around You.”AdChoices广告We’re going to guess “Artwork All Around You” means you’ll be able to use Snapchat to view virtual Koons art in the real-world à la Pokemon Go. Apple and Google are flocking to AR but Snapchat is already a big player in the space with its iconic selfie filters and reality-distorting “world lenses.” So it makes sense they’d want to sure up their dominance.Meanwhile, Koons himself is a self-avowed Snapchat fan, using the app to brag about his huge paydays. Plus Koons’ love of pop culture and making art of the mundane seems like a perfect with Snapchat’s overall role in society right now. This AR app would also most likely have geo-location features, meaning certain art would only appear in certain location allowing them to still maintain the rarity and allure of physical art.Again, none of this is officially official yet. It’s a leak. We’ll be able to confirm what Snapchat’s clock is really ticking down to until later today. But it’s ticking down to this Jeff Koons Snapchat AR art project.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
