Her life jacket was later found, but there was still no sign of her.Adults were in the boat at the time of the accident.San Diego lifeguard Lt. Rich Stropky said that the boat was not operating under its own power when it happened, and was drifting with the waves and wind.Rescue efforts were halted around sunset as conditions it became too dark for divers to safely continue. The lake has clearer water than most, a help for search crews, but it also has a lot of underwater debris, Stropky said.“There’s big huge rocks you can get snagged on, and there’s lots of trees and branches and that makes this type of thing always dangerous,” he said.Search crews were back in the water after daybreak Sunday, and the lake will be closed for recreation Sunday to aid in the recovery, according to Foster.Lifeguards spoke to the boat operator and were able to narrow down a location to restart the search using SONAR, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Monica Munoz. How Quartz is Reinventing the Email Newsletter

first_img The Daily Brief itself has three different editions, all of which come out at 6:00 a.m. in their respective time zones: North America (Eastern time), Europe (Central European time), and Asia (Hong Kong time). Separate editorial teams hand off production of the newsletter in eight-hour increments, allowing uninterrupted, 24/7 coverage. That’s the message 15,000 advertising professionals, brand representatives, and marketers received in their inboxes early Monday morning at the start of the third day of Cannes Lions 2016, the largest annual gathering for the global advertising industry, taking place this week on the French Riviera. “Good morning, delegates!” “To me, it’s the best kind of media partnership,” Quartz president and publisher, Jay Lauf, tells Folio:. “We’re three and a half years old, and for a growing global brand, exposure at such a premiere event provides great value for us. But I think what we’ll also be able to do is provide great value to the attendees and the event itself by doing what we do really well, keeping them informed in intelligent ways.” The result was a daily newsletter delivered in the morning and designed to tell readers not just what happened while they were sleeping, but what to expect for the day ahead. Unlike most newsletter products, not all of the links go back to Quartz’s website, qz.com. In fact, most go to outside sources, even competitors. Four years, 16 million unique monthly readers, two international expansions, and one messaging-style mobile news app later, Quartz has become a prime embodiment of the “digital native” media brand archetype—thanks in no small part to its witty, informative, and intensely curated email newsletter, which now boasts more than 200,000 subscribers, according to the company. “One of the things we felt was an innovation was actually having human beings write and edit and curate the Daily Brief,” adds Lauf. “Rather than have it be sort of an automated scrape of headlines that you throw into an email, our writers and editors would put a lot of thought into things like the synopses—how do I make somebody really smart on this subject without them having to click through if they don’t want to?” “It comes to them,” Lauf says. “Our readers are often busy, they might often be distracted, they can often be regimented in their schedules, so the fact that you’ve got something you can rely on, that comes in at 6 a.m. every day. It’s at a time that it allows you to get smart before your day gets going.” And it has. If anecdotal evidence like social media love letters—or the fact that the Daily Brief’s format has since been replicated by competitors across the industry—does not suffice, consider this statistic: since its launch in 2012, Lauf says the Daily Brief has achieved a consistent unique open rate of around 40 percent, vastly outpacing industry norms of about half that figure. “It’s very deliberately user-first,” Lauf continues. “A lot of publishers give lip service to that, but don’t really deliver on it. We put ourselves in the shoes of the busy reader that we serve, who may not want an app or a newsletter that’s just another marketing vehicle to keep people inside the walled garden. It’s about making our readers smarter. If that means linking out to other sources, we believe that will come back to us in terms of loyalty.”center_img He says the festival’s stature as an international gathering of marketers made it an obvious choice as a test-site for a special-edition Daily Brief. Quartz is, quite literally, a global brand, to the point that it originally required all of its journalists to be fluent in at least two languages. According to Lauf, the journalism team now speaks 35 languages fluently and, combined, has reported from over 115 countries around the world. Selecting email as a key channel in the media mix—the Daily Brief has been around since Quartz’s inception—may have seemed like an odd play for a brand that marketed itself as forward-thinking. For one, Lauf says, email was a widely overlooked mechanism for connecting with audiences, an automated marketing vehicle often existing solely to drive clicks back to publishers’ websites. Those who aren’t spending their week rubbing elbows with the rich and creative on the French Riviera can keep up to date with the Cannes-specific Daily Brief by subscribing here. Atlantic Media, the parent company behind the 158-year-old magazine The Atlantic, generated considerable buzz when it announced plans to launch a digital-only brand back in 2012. The sender: Quartz, Atlantic Media’s four-year-old digital outlet focused on global business news and analysis, which has developed a special version of its immesely successful Daily Brief newsletter solely focused on Cannes Lions. Simplicity and consistency are key, he adds. Consumers don’t have to scroll through their social feeds to find what they’re looking for.  Tasked with producing the special Cannes-specific version of the Daily Brief is executive editor Zach Seward, Quartz’s VP of product. On top of the thousands of attendees who were automatically subscribed after registering for Cannes Lions, an additional 1,100 subscribers have signed on, looking to stay abreast of the festival’s latest developments, according to Lauf. “We thought that an email product shouldn’t just be headlines to drive you back to the website,” Lauf says. “Rather, we asked, ‘What would we want from an email product? How could an email we receive every morning make us smarter?'”last_img read more

SRH vs KXIP Dream 11 and MPL Fantasy tips live stream preview

first_imgSunrisers Hyderabad, placed fourth on the points table, and Kings XI Punjab, placed fifth, will lock horns in Hyderabad and the winner of this contest will be in great shape to qualify for the playoffs. Both the sides are top heavy, their spinners are frugal and there are concerns with the pace bowlers. However, now they need to put their best foot forward if they want to qualify for the playoffs. This IPL season is alive and kicking even in its penultimate week.Predicted XI of both the teams: David WarnerIANSSunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner, Shreevats Goswami (wk), Kane Williamson (c), Manish Pandey, Vijay Shankar, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sandeep Sharma, Khaleel AhmedKings XI Punjab: KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Mandeep Singh, Nicholas Pooran(w), Ravichandran Ashwin(c), Hardus Viljoen, Sam Curran, Murugan Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep SinghFantasy tips and suggestions: KL RahulReutersWicket-keeper: Kings XI Punjab have used Nicholas Pooran as the wicket-keeper in the recent matches and he could be their trump card in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad as he could be shunted up the order.Batsmen: KL Rahul, who has been in roaring form for KXIP this year, will hold the key once again for Punjab. In the last match against SRH, he combined brilliantly with Mayank Agarwal, who should be another pick, to hand KXIP an easy win. Also, David Warner, who will be playing his final game of the season, remains the biggest threat for Kings XI Punjab in this fixture. And then there is Manish Pandey, a batsman who has suddenly erupted for SRH, and is one of the key members of this side. He has to come good for SRH, especially in the absence of Jonny Bairstow.All-rounders: R Ashwin could play Sam Curran in this match as in his short career so far, he has displayed tremendous temperament in crunch situations which is exactly what is needed in this crucial tie. Also, Mohammad Nabi, who could replace Shakib al Hasan, should be in the fantasy side, as he is a proven performer and always picks up wickets in the powerplay overs.Spinners: R Ashwin has been one constant performer for KXIP this year and has been frugal with his off break. Also, he has been able to pick up wickets in the bargain which has impeded the progress of the opposition. Also, Rashid Khan, who has been exciting and very effective this season, continues to pick up wickets and control the game in the middle overs.Seamers: Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar – Two Indian seamers who hold the key with the ball for their respective sides will have to be penetrative both with the new as well as the old ball.last_img read more

Qatar council backs permanent residency law for foreigners

first_imgQatar relies massively on foreign labour. AFPQatar has moved closer to granting permanent residency to foreigners after its senior legislative body approved a draft law, first announced in the wake of the ongoing Gulf crisis.State media reported the Shura Council agreed on Monday to back a law which would grant residency to expatriates who provide valuable services as well as to the children of Qatari women married to non-Qataris.”The Advisory (Shura) Council approved a draft law on permanent residency,” the Qatar News Agency reported.Permanent residents would be allowed to have free state education, healthcare and be given the right to own property. It is thought to be the first such law proposed by one of the energy-rich Gulf states. It was first announced last August just two months after Qatar was boycotted by neighbouring former allies in a bitter diplomatic dispute.Like other nations in the region, Qatar relies massively on foreign labour. Its current population of 2.71 million, a record, is made up of almost 90 per cent non-nationals, many helping the country prepare to host the 2022 World Cup.There are some 315,000 Qatari nationals. The residency proposal will now be considered by Qatar’s cabinet and Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani before it becomes law.last_img read more

Bowser Budget Offers Relief to Churches

first_imgBy James Wright, Special to the AFRO  jwright@afro.comThe District’s mayor’s budget proposal includes many provisions that address the concerns of African Americans.Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) held a reporters’ roundtable March 26 at the John A. Wilson Building. The purpose of the roundtable was to brief reporters on her 2019 fiscal year budget.Muriel Bowser is the mayor of the District of Columbia. (AFRO Stock Photo)“I gave the budget to the D.C. Council on March 21 and testified for it on March 23,” Bowser said. “The council will go through their usual 54-day review period in which they will make changes, if any, that they see fit. This year, the council will vote on it at the end of May, which is earlier than usual.”The $14.5 billion budget proposal includes investments in infrastructure, education, affordable housing, health and human services, economic opportunity, seniors and public safety. One of the key line items in the budget is $300 million for a new, state of the art hospital on the St. Elizabeths East campus in Ward 8.“This new hospital will replace the United Medical Center,” the mayor said in response to a question by the AFRO. The United Medical Center is the District’s only comprehensive medical facility east of the Anacostia River and it has been plagued over the years with financial problems due to the high costs of treating uninsured patients and questionable financial management.Bowser put $6 million for water bill relief for District residents. There has been ongoing controversy about the exorbitant rates that African-American churches and residents are being charged on their water bills that is due to a federal mandate to fix the city’s aging storm water system and has nothing to do with their own water usage.Bowser told the AFRO that she is well-aware of the matter and has sent a letter to DC Water indicating that their rates are unfair to District residents. In the meantime, she said water bill rates will continue to rise and the $6 million will help District churches and residents.“We are proposing some relief,” she said. “The $6 million will be used to help low-income households and others. We are also asking DC Water to match the $6 million in relief and freeze some of the charges on residents’ water bills for three years.”There are only three full-service grocery stores in both Wards 7 and 8 and Bowser’s budget has funded a program to deal with that.“I am aware that developer Jair Lynch is looking to bring a grocer in the Penn Branch shopping center in Ward 7 that could be Fresh Foods and there is an effort to bring Good Foods Market in another part of Ward 7 as well as a grocer in Ward 8 on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. That is the purpose of the Neighborhood Fund.”Affordable housing is an issue for many Black District residents and the mayor funded the Housing Production Fund Trust at the level of $100 million. She allocated $1.5 million in capital funds to expand the Model Cities & Congress Heights Senior Wellness Centers in Ward 8 and $12.5 million increase for childcare investments, including an increase in childcare subsidies.D.C. Council member Trayon White (D-Ward 8), who has publicly disagreed with Bowser on some issues regarding his ward, praised her budget.“Muriel Bowser answered the call with not all but a lot of great wins for Ward 8,” White said in a message to his constituents urging them to get involved in the budget process. “It’s in the council now so our work is not done.”last_img read more

If you are dressing up as a zombie, ghost, witch, vampire or a mummy, go for a pale look. Your base should be a few shades lighter than your skin tone to achieve this. For other looks, your regular base should be fine. -Eyes: First thing, people look at the eyes, so make sure your eye makeup is good. Dark Gray or Black eyeshadow suit most of the dark characters. Just play around with the shapes according to your costume. Deep red blended with black is perfect for a Vampire. Mamata offers to quit as CM party rejects

first_imgKolkata: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Saturday offered to quit as chief minister of West Bengal following her party’s drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls but the TMC rejected it. Addressing her first press conference after the election results were declared, she accused the BJP of polarising the people on religious lines to garner votes in West Bengal. “At TMC’s internal meeting, I offered to leave the chief minister’s post. However, the offer was rejected by the party and I may continue,” Banerjee said. She also raised suspicion over BJP’s stellar poll performance. “This huge victory is not beyond suspicion. It is quite astonishing how opposition is completely wiped out in several states. There has been some setting and foreign powers are also involved,” she claimed. The TMC chief also said that an emergency-like situation was created in the state by the BJP to win the elections.last_img read more

BYOD Is the Corporate Norm But Data Security Lags Far Behind

first_imgAugust 18, 2014 4 min read In 2009, CEOs in just about every large organization started purchasing iPhones and demanding access to corporate email. Although IT had securely managed BlackBerry deployments in place, many departments accommodated this request, only to find a few months later that thousands of employees had taken after these CEOs, with the key distinction that their iPhones were unauthorized. As this story and countless others illustrate, the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) phenomenon disrupted enterprise IT practically overnight. To catch up, the makeshift solution for many organizations has been “mobile device management” (MDM). This first attempt to secure BYOD was a knee-jerk reaction focused on managing personally owned devices in much the same way that corporate-owned laptops are managed.Related: 5 Reasons BYOD for Travel Is Here to StayAccording to a recent Gartner report, by 2016, 20 percent of enterprise BYOD programs will fail due to deployment of MDM measures that are too restrictive. The issue with MDM is it secures devices, not corporate data, and has never been a solid solution for either IT or employees in BYOD environments. Let’s examine a few reasons why.IT. The IT department doesn’t enjoy imposing suffocating restrictions on employees, but meeting the employee demand for BYOD often leaves them no choice. IT is chartered with securing the organization’s data so they use the technology available to them – MDM. That the price of this BYOD security solution is dictatorial control over employees’ personal devices is an unfortunate, necessary evil.A recent ESG report that surveyed organizations of 1,000 or more employees shockingly found that just 21 percent have implemented and standardized an MDM solution. That means that despite BYOD being one of the biggest trends in enterprise IT today, just one in five enterprises have deployed a solution to secure it. That is cause for alarm.Employees. Enterprise data is frequently exposed with BYOD. For example, an employee might use a personal smartphone to access data on Salesforce.com over a 4G wireless network, inadvertently sharing sensitive corporate data.Just as the majority of employees are blissfully unaware of the potential security breaches they are exposing their company to, they would be equally mortified if they were fully aware of what MDM products can access. According to a survey carried out by Harris Interactive on behalf of mobile security firm AdaptiveMobile, most employees do not believe that their employer can see what they are doing on their personal devices, yet 89 percent of employers said they have visibility into their employees devices at all times.Related: How the Cloud Can Save You From a ‘BYOD’ Tech NightmareThis raises huge concerns for employees who are extremely uncomfortable with IT accessing personal information and controlling their device usage. Not to mention the horror stories of employees who have everything wiped from their phone if they leave a company. The future of BYOD security. BYOD has been a shock for many organizations, but it is here to stay and the path forward is to enable employees through BYOD programs. The focus must shift from securing the device to securing corporate data on the device. Next-generation BYOD solutions must not only secure corporate data, but be device-agnostic and deploy with minimal effort on either the employee or IT’s part.At the same time, the native user experience on mobile must be taken into account and respected. Today’s employees are tech-savvy and quick to write-off IT as old school and out of touch. These employees will not hesitate to “go rogue” and find workarounds if IT slows them down or invades their privacy. Next-generation BYOD security solutions must be completely frictionless and transparent to employees.Unfortunately for IT, company-issued BlackBerry phones are unlikely to make a comeback in the corporate world, but enabling a mobile workforce does not have to be a constant give-and-take. Enterprises can embrace BYOD while maintaining security and privacy but it will require a solution with BYOD in its DNA.Related: Dark ‘Cloud’ Forming: The Struggle to Balance Security and Employee Privacy Register Now » Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
