GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):Former West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after making 286 international appearances for West Indies.Sarwan, 36, made the announcement on Thursday during a ceremony at the Stella Maris Primary School in Guyana, where he launched his career by scoring two centuries in a now-defunct Under-12 competition. Also a former Guyana captain, Sarwan was given a hero’s welcome as students lined up and chanted his name on arrival.”Sarwan always loved cricket. I remember when he was just 10, he was first picked for Stella Marris. He was in third standard and got the Man of the Match award, making 49 in the final,” recalled Surendra Khayyam, Sarwan’s vice-captain at Stella Marris.Sarwan, who made his first-class debut for Guyana against Barbados in the Red Stripe Cup of 1995-96 at the age of 15, had an international career that lasted 13 years. He featured in 87 Tests, 181 one day internationals (ODI), and 18 Twenty20 internationals and boasts 15 Test centuries.”Carl Hooper saw me at Georgetown Cricket Club when I was 14 and told me that I would play Test cricket,” said Sarwan, who launched his Test career in 2000 by scoring 84 against Pakistan in Barbados.HARD WORK”That inspired me to really train and work hard, and here I am today.”Sarwan has identified the high points of his career as his 105 in Antigua which led West Indies to a record 418-run successful chase against Australia in May 2003, his 84 on debut against Pakistan, and his career-best 291 against England in Barbados in 2009.”When I made the Guyana team at 15, my roommate was Keith Semple. I was being peppered by the pacers since I was a little boy from Wakenaam, and I was intimidated by guys who were big and tall and did not do well,” recounted Sarwan, who captained West Indies in four Tests, five ODIs and two T20s, and who finished his career with a total of 11, 994 international runs, spread across all three formats of the game.”I was batting well in practice, but I was afraid to play shots in the games. Semple said I should bat the way I batted in the nets, and I started to do that.”Sarwan’s career was not without controversy. In 2005, he was one of seven players who were dropped for the series against Pakistan and South Africa following a contract conflict between individual sponsor Cable and Wireless and the team sponsor Digicel.Sarwan’s last appearance for West Indies was during the 2013 Champions Trophy, but he was dropped after poor performances against Pakistan and India.

Bing now makes it easier to find song lyrics, TV shows with online video, as well as information about movies and movie times. Bing now also allows users to preview songs via Microsoft’s Zune service. The implementation of this – with the songs and preview buttons at the top of the search results – looks almost exactly like Google’s Music Search. In addition to these search-oriented features, Microsoft also partnered with a number of developers to offer about 100 popular casual games directly on Bing.Music: Lyrics Search and Full Music Preview As Stefan Weitz, Microsoft’s Director of Bing, told us earlier this year when we got to see a sneak preview of some of these new features, lyrics are an extremely popular search category, yet a lot of lyrics sites are rather shady and the right lyrics are often hard to find.According to Microsoft, about 70% of people online look for lyrics at one time or another. Now, whenever you search for a song that is in Microsoft’s Zune library, Bing gives you the option to also see the lyrics to this song. The presentation is very basic – with the lyrics on a plain white background – but infinitely better than what you would find on most lyrics sites on the Web today. As you search for songs, Bing’s new music preview feature also allows you to play every single song in the Zune catalog once (after the first play, you will only get a 30 second preview). Songs can be bought from Microsoft’s own Zune music service, iTunes and Amazon.Bing Games Bing now hosts over 100 popular casual games that users can play directly in the search engine. In addition, just like lyrics searches often lead to some of the darker parts of the Internet, searches for game walkthroughs and cheats also often end up on rather sketchy sites. The Bing team now aggregates this information, as well as reviews and videos, from trustworthy sites.TV Shows and MoviesWhile this isn’t a comprehensive “TV Guide for the Internet” like Clicker and its competitors, Bing now also links directly to full-length episodes of popular TV shows. Microsoft indexes about 1,500 shows for this service. For those who still watch “real” TV, Bing also now presents guide information for these shows. For movies, the search engine now displays movie times, reviews, as well as real time sentiment analysis about the movie from Twitter and Facebook. In addition, Bing adds information about restaurants near the movie theater and parking information from Bing Maps. One Search Domain at a TimeIt is clear that Bing is trying to find all the top search domains (travel and shopping were one of Bing’s first strengths there) and then cover them as best it can by bringing together the best information sources right in the search engine. While Google is also working on similar initiatives, the company still focuses mostly on taking users to other sites. Bing, on the other hand, is squarely focused on providing users with the answers they are looking for right on its own property (though Microsoft, of course, also still presents plenty of links).
Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting brian proffitt A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… With the release of yet more data showing Windows 8’s dismal performance in the marketplace, we have to ask: Is Windows 8 failing to gain traction because it sucks, or because there’s no demand for it?That is a key question that must be on the minds of the execs at Microsoft right now, but it’s a question that may also impact anyone else who makes software on a timed version release scheduled these days.First, the numbers from NetMarketshare. Looking at the Desktop Operating System Marketshare for May, Windows 8 is fourth on the rankings list, its 4.27% market share coming in behind Windows 7 (44.85%), Windows XP (37.74%) and Windows Vista (4.51%). While Windows 8 is outperforming each of the individual versions of Mac OS X, there are still far fewer Windows 8 machines in the world than any given OS X machine (7.06% combined).Given that we are just past the seven-month mark for the official release of Windows 8, you’d normally think that Windows 8 would have passed at least one the previous three versions of Windows by now. But here it is, still behind Vista, the much maligned version of Windows that debuted more than six years ago, in November 2006.Blame A Crowded, Shrinking MarketIt would be very easy to point fingers at the Windows development team and place the blame on the radical redesign of the Windows 8 interface as the cause of the problem. But that may be too much of a generalization.A larger cause for the new operating system’s failure to gain traction in the marketplace may lie in an unexpected reason: people are happy with what they have. This satisfaction lies in two categories: the Windows software they have is stable enough to support the apps they are using and the hardware they are using is powerful enough to run the OS and apps they are using.Since fewer PCs are being upgraded, Windows 8 preload have fewer opportunities to enter the market. This situation may resonate with ReadWrite users, some of whom cited this slow down in hardware upgrading as one of the reasons PC sales are slowing down, even as tablet sales accelerate.(See also Tablets Killing Desktops Faster Than Ever)After years of new application upgrades forcing users to upgrade their machines if they wanted their new software to run faster than a crawl, web-based apps like Gmail and social network platforms like Facebook have disrupted the hardware/software upgrade cycle.Feature saturation on local applications like office suites played a contributing factor, too. If my business communications and finances can be handled quite well with Office 2007, why upgrade and deal with the pain of retraining?Given such a situation, Windows 8 may have really never stood a chance for massive blockbuster release numbers. The market is too crowded with, ironically, other Windows installs that are doing the jobs they need to do well enough. Microsoft also faces a similar problem of entrenchment in the mobile sector, though with iOS and Android standing in the way.Eventually, Windows 8 will be the market leader. Entropy will see to that, as PCs and laptops break down and need to be replaced. But by that time, it may be Windows 9 or even 10 that will be standing in line, waiting for their turn as number one in the PC marketplace. That probably sounds like an overly dramatic statement to most readers of this blog, but the truth is that it’s the truth. Anthony’s guest on this episode is Cat Hoke, an amazing woman who’s working to see that the hustlers in prison who really want a second chance at life actually get their first chance ever, by rehabilitating and training them to use their natural propensity to hustle in legal ways – like entrepreneurship and business. This is an amazing conversation you’ll be glad you listened to, so be sure you do listen..@catherine_hoke: Transforming #Hustlers Into #Entrepreneurs – Episode #105 @DefyVenturesClick To TweetCat Hoke works with EITs, Entrepreneurs in Training who are coming out of incarcerationMost of the people in prisons don’t live with any real sense of hope. When you are serving a life sentence, what is there to hope for? That mindset becomes a chain of defeat that hangs over them and the environment in which they live reminds them how hopeless their situation is every day of their lives. So when Cat Hoke and her team walk into a prison and begin spouting off things about hope and change, it’s a hard sell. But she’s one of the most convincing salespeople you’ll ever meet. Currently, her program, Defy Ventures is serving over 5000 EITs – entrepreneurs in training – and is teaching them not only what it means to hope, but what it means to be free from the chains of prison and emotional bondage. You’ve got to hear Cat’s story, on this episode of In The Arena.Turning hustlers into Entrepreneurs with only a 3.2% recidivism rateOne of the main problems with the penal system in most countries is that they are not really about rehabilitation, they are only about punishment. The people inside know that and the culture and environment within the walls of the prison show it to be true. But the Defy Ventures team has made a significant difference in many prisons in the United States already. With only a 3.2% recidivism rate (release offenders going back to prison) they are undoubtedly having an impact. You can hear how the Defy team makes such a difference in the lives of people most of society considers beyond redemption, on this episode.Turning #hustlers into #entrepreneurs with only a 3.2% #recidivism rate @DefyVentures @catherine_hokeClick To TweetCat’s father taught what not to be and empowered her in the processPart of what Cat has come to realize is that the circumstances of her birth are really the only things that kept her off a path that leads to prison. As she’s met more and more of the people who are incarcerated she’s realized that many of them were born into circumstances where it was next to impossible to avoid eventual incarceration. Her father, for example, set her up for success through the things he taught and the intentional care he showed. He wouldn’t allow her to whine or complain and he challenged her with a form of “shark tank” around the dinner table, giving her entrepreneurial or business challenges to figure out. The realization of how much advantage she had compared to many others is what has driven her to a place of compassion rather than criticism. The things that drove them into prison in the first place – hurt, anger, neglect, abandonment – are still with them. The Defy Ventures program is not only about teaching job skills and business savvy, it’s about taking those individuals who have been incarcerated to a place where healing can begin. It’s a tough road that even the toughest people don’t easily walk, but when the journey is complete it’s a liberating thing – in more ways than one. Handicapped by a dislocated thumb and up against a two-time world champion, Indian boxer Vijender Singh on Monday said he still managed to pull off the Asian Games gold medal as “luck was back” on his side a month after deserting him at the Commonwealth Games.Vijender Kumar flaunts his gold medalWorld number one Vijender blanked Uzbekistan’s two-time world champion Abbos Atoev in the Asian Games final despite dislocating his thumb in the opening three minutes of the bout.Recalling the tense moments, the 25-year-old, whose hand is currently heavily bandaged, said a power-packed left hook led to the dislocation and leaving him to fight practically with one hand.”My hand was in a terrible state even before the Asian Games but it completely broke at the worst possible time.It was in the closing stages of the first round. I got the score for that left hook but I knew my hand was gone. I immediately told my coach that I cannot move it,” Vijender said upon his return to the country from Guangzhou today.”I asked the coach what the scoreline was, he told me it was 2-0. I thought I will give it a shot and continued. In the second round, I was not using my left hand at all. I was just swaying it once in a while to scare off Atoev, who thankfully didn’t get an idea as to what had happened,” he said.”When I took a 5-0 lead in the second round, I knew the bout was mine from here. I kept praying to almighty and I think that also helped. In the end, I guess I got lucky, god was with me,” he added.advertisementThe Olympic and World Championships bronze-medallist had settled for a rather disappointing bronze at the CWG here after losing in the semifinals due to a couple of warnings for clinching. And Vijender said the Asiad gold has finally wiped off the disappointment. .”That loss completely shattered me. I hadn’t felt so miserable in a long time. When I went to the Asiad, I was taking it one bout at a time. I think I peaked at the right time besides China is lucky for me. My rise started in Beijing after all,” Vijender said referring to his breakthrough Olympic bronze.”At the CWG, there were just too many distractions around me. The fact that so many people know me becomes a problem at times because then it takes away the focus. I like to go into a shell during major events. Keep to myself and focus, at the Asiad I could do that. There was peace around me and that helped me remain calm,” he said.”Moreover, it was my day. When I lost to Atoev in the World Championships, it was his day. Luck is a major factor. One cannot rule that out,” he added.”My toughest bout was the first one. I took the Chinese Taipei guy lightly initially but he fought hard before I got into the groove at just the right time.”The Haryana-lad also credited Cuban coach B I Fernandes for his success. “Fernandes has a sharp mind and he keeps giving advice from the sidelines. In Guangzhou, because there was not much noise around me, I could actually hear him and put his advice to use. In Delhi, his voice used to get drowned in all the hooting,” he explained. At least a month-long break follows from here before Vijender starts preparing for the World Championships and the Olympic qualifiers for 2012 Games in London. “I am desperate to go home and eat to my heart’s content. It’s impossible to explain what we go through when we are maintaining weight for tournaments,” he signed off. With inputs from PTI
India coach Gary Kirsten on Sunday paid rich tribute to Sachin Tendulkar for scoring a historic 50th Test ton in Centurion, describing him as professor of batting.Terming Tendulkar’s feat of scoring a half century of centuries as incredible, Kirsten credited his unmatched success to his sound technique, ability to play almost all the shots in the book and diligent preparedness.”It is an incredible feat. It must be a special one and he deserves it. He has the techniques to play almost all the shots in the book. He is the professor of batting,” Kirsten said, praising Tendulkar on becoming the first cricketer to score 50 Test tons here.”The key to his success is his approach to the game, his humility to learn and try to do better all the time. He diligently prepares for every match. For him, a Test match begins two days earlier, preparing for it. I am privileged to have associated with him for the last three years,” Kirsten said.”His success at the top level under the huge expectations in India is remarkable. It is quite different in India than other countries and the adulation he got there is amazing. At any time, Tendulkar will be surrounded by 300 people,” he said.Kirsten said despite the seniormost player in the team, Tendulkar was the one who spends most time at the nets and faces maximum number of balls.”He wants to face the maximum number of balls at the nets. You will not see him play a loose shot at the nets. He is focused all the time, he wants to do better all the time,” said Kirsten.advertisement”He has been phenomenal this year. I think he is playing better than ever. He is enjoying his cricket at present,” he said. The former South African opening batsman said despite his personal achievements, Tendulkar was a perfect team-man who wants to do his best for the team’s cause.”He is a perfect team-man and he always gives his best every time he goes out to a cricket field. He has been a huge motivational factor in the side in the past three years I have been associated with the team,” Kirsten said.About India staring defeat in the Test, Kirsten admitted South Africa are in a strong position.”We have a lot to work tomorrow. South Africa are in a strong position. But let us see what happens tomorrow. May be there is help from rain also,” he said.”But, the players have done well in the second innings. They have shown we can also play on equal terms. The strong batting display in the second innings will boost the confidence of the players in the series,” he added.- With PTI inputs

So, let us use our positions as public officers to be the positive change… Jamaica has been yearning for,” the Mayor said.He expressed concern about the local authorities not having the power to take corrective or disciplinary action against agencies, and requested Minister, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, to consider his petition.“The development of the parishes can be negatively impacted by the inaction of agencies. We must be able to hold agencies accountable when they fail the citizens. That is why I am urging all mayors, let us petition that we are given more teeth to manage the affairs of our parishes,” he said. The conference is being held under the theme ‘Strengthening responsiveness and accountability within the local governance framework’.
Singer, songwriter and philanthropist Sir Ivan, also known as Peaceman, has released a new (EDM) electronic dance music version of John Lennon’s “Imagine”.The song is co-produced by Grammy Award winner Omar Akram and legendary music arranger Peter Rafelson. It is the first single released off SIR IVAN’s new 10 song album called “Peaceman Shines”. Each of the 10 songs, created by 10 different producers, are all well-known anti-war and peace songs from the 60s and early 70s, except for two original songs, co-written by Sir Ivan, that share the same theme.Sir Ivan stated, “In light of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, and to pay respect to John Lennon, who passed away 35 years ago, on December 8th 1980, it is an appropriate time for a new generation to listen to Lennon’s optimistic lyrics, which offer hope to all people on the planet and a formula for world peace.”This is not the first time SIR IVAN has released a new version of “Imagine,” He did so on September 4th, 2001, exactly one week before September 11th, when he launched his music career and became the first recording artist in history to turn any slow ballad of the Beatles or John Lennon into an up tempo dance record. Personally signed to the Tommy Boy Label by its owner, Tom Silverman, SIR IVAN’s revolutionary fast paced version of “Imagine” became an instant top 40 hit on the Billboard Dance Chart. This proved that even thirty years after the original was released by John Lennon in 1971, the lyrics of “Imagine” were just as relevant to a whole new generation. Now, 15 years after SIR IVAN’s 2001 release, because the planet still has not learned to live in peace, SIR IVAN is once again giving the world an opportunity to come together as one while raising money for a good cause. In 2005, Sir Ivan, son of Auschwitz survivor Siggi B. Wilzig, created The Peaceman Foundation, a charity that donates funds to other non-profit organizations that help people suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a debilitating mental condition that often results from exposure to severe acts of violence, such as brutal attacks against members of the LGBT community, atrocities of war and terrorism. Sir Ivan has seen firsthand what survivors go through. His own father suffered from classic PTSD symptoms; severe headaches, flashbacks, nightmares and depression, as a result of brutal beatings in the concentration camps and the deaths of 59 members of his family during the Holocaust. All of Sir Ivan’s recording artist royalties from the single “Imagine” and the album “Peaceman Shines” will be donated to The Peaceman Foundation to battle PTSD. Both are available on iTunes, Amazon MP3, Beatport Pro and many other top digital music stores. Physical CDs can be purchased at CD Baby.Find out more here.
