Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At SIU

first_img Next Game: Watch Live Wichita State 9/30/2016 – 7:00 PM CARBONDALE, Ill. – Twenty-four hours after a grueling five-set win to open Missouri Valley Conference play, the Drake University volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss at Southern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 24, evening.Drake (10-6, 1-1 MVC) dropped the contest by set scores of 25-16, 27-29, 25-17 and 25-21. Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.) led the Bulldogs with 12 kills on 34 attempts with four blocks. Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) and Odessa Cody (Chicago, Ill.) each added eight kills, but the Bulldogs only managed to hit .157 in the loss. Freshman Elle Tubbs (Clinton, Iowa) made her first start for the Bulldogs and notched six blocks.SIU (11-5, 2-0 MVC) was paced by four players in double figure kills with Abby Barrow’s 13 leading the way.SIU set the tone early in the match as a 6-0 run gave the Salukis an 18-12 lead that would later balloon to nine points en route to an easy 25-16 win in in the opening set. The second set was much more closely contested as neither team led by more than four points throughout. Facing set point with a 24-21 deficit, Drake rallied for three-straight points from Tubbs, Kameo Pope (Belle Plaine, Iowa) and Cody to tie the match, 24-24. The Bulldogs staved off set point once again and closed the set with three-straight points to take the extended set, 29-27.However, following intermission, the Salukis retook control of the match by jumping out to an 11-3 lead. Drake briefly pulled within five points, but would get no closer as SIU took the set, 25-17. SIU went on to lead the fourth set from start to finish, but not without another challenge from the Bulldogs. Facing match point at 24-18, Drake scored three-straight points to pull within three points, 24-21, but could get no closer as an attack error sealed the set and match for SIU.The Bulldogs return home to the Knapp Center next week to continue MVC action against perennial MVC powers Wichita State and Missouri State.
