Pjanic is Juventus’ most important player right now They held their own for long periods against Madrid, with Sadio Mane restoring parity at one stage, but an untimely injury to Mohamed Salah and individual errors ended up costing them dear.Domestic foes have delighted in the Reds’ failure on the grandest of stages, but Van Dijk has been quick to point out that any of their critics would have loved to be in a similar position, telling talkSPORT: “Of course we should be proud of ourselves. All the teams in England want to be in our position right now.”They act like they’re happy, but I think they should be jealous!”We were here, unfortunately we lost, but I think we need to take this to next season and make sure we do even better than we did this year.”Liverpool had entered the 2017-18 Champions League at the play-off stage, with Klopp’s side having more challenges than most to overcome. They tackled the vast majority of those in style, with famous victories toasted over the likes of Manchester City and Roma, but Madrid proved too strong in the final. The Blancos are the most decorated side in European club football, with there no shame in coming up short against a side which is basking in the glory of a third successive continental crown and a 13th in total.last_img read more

DryShips Court Rejects Preliminary Injunction Motion

first_imgzoom The High Court of the Marshall Islands has denied a motion for a preliminary injunction filed by plaintiff Michael Sammons, a US investor in DryShips, legally embattled shipping company informed on Monday. The preliminary injunction motion had sought to suspend any further issuances of new common shares by the company at a price per share below the price specified.“The court issued its ruling denying the plaintiff’s request after hearing arguments by counsel for the plaintiff, DryShips, and Mr. Economou. The court has ordered that defendants answer, move against or otherwise respond to the complaint by August 18, 2017,” DryShips said.Furthermore, the shipowner and its CEO revealed plans to fight the complaint by the aforementioned deadline set by the court. The ruling follows an application for a temporary restraining order filed early this month in the Republic of the Marshall Islands against the company and its CEO which had been denied as well. The application is part of a lawsuit claiming breaches of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, and conflict of interest. In addition, the company has been faced with a class action lawsuit by its shareholders filed in the New York District Court against the company and two of its executive officers. The complaint alleges that the company and two of its executive officers violated the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 by selling of shares to Kalani Investments at deep discounts, and are claiming damages. However, DryShips said that the complaint is without merit, adding that, together with its management, it plans to “vigorously defend” against the allegations.Despite the recent legal action over its shares, DryShips launched 1-for-7 reverse stock split of the company’s issued common shares.last_img read more

Serena Williams Wins Madrid Open for 50th Career Title

Serena Williams proved why she is the world’s No. 1 female tennis player on Sunday by defeating Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-4 in the finals of the Madrid Open, capturing her 50th career title.“It feels good,” Williams told reporters after the match about securing her 50th title. “I don’t know how many more I can. Who knows if I will even another title? I just want to live the dream. Hopefully, I can keep it going.”Entering Sunday’s match, Williams was 12-2 against Sharapova. The only two losses came in 2004, but Williams took control of the game from the beginning to assure that there would not be a third loss to the second-ranked Sharapova. The 31-year-old Williams was able to capitalize on Sharapova’s inability to control her serve. The Russian committed five double faults in her first three service games, which allowed Williams to strike several winning shots before the end of the first set.“I started the match really slow and against an opponent like her you can’t give her that,” Sharapova said. “I wasn’t reacting well. I wasn’t moving well. Not only the double fault I made, I didn’t have a lot of great first serves in. She was really stepping up.”Sharapova appeared to be settling into the game by the second set. She earned and converted her first break point, which allowed her to open the second set with a 3-1 lead. However, her inconsistent serve proved to be pivotal, causing her to double fault and cede back her break after Williams had set up three break points.Williams was able to close out Sharapova after she recorded her eighth and final double fault, which improved her record to 13-2 against the Russian.Had Sharapova defeated Williams, she would have earned the No. 1 spot, but for now Williams will retain that coveted ranking. But they could meet again at the end of this month during the French Open, competing in the finals and the No. 1 ranking. read more

WHAT A MESS Town Urges Residents To Stop Tossing Dog Waste Bags

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Animal Control Officer Christopher Sullivan recently took to social media to remind residents not to throw dog waste in catch basins.“I was notified by DPW that they recently removed a large amount of dog waste bags that were dropped in catch basins in the Lt. Buck Dr./Moore Street area, as well as a few throughout town,” wrote Sullivan. “Not only is this a MAJOR violation in stormwater quality, and just plain disgusting, it is illegal.”Sullivan asked residents to read this brochure to better understand the seriousness of the problem. The brochure reads, in part:Pet waste is a major source of water contamination and contains harmful bacteria and parasites. Dog feces can contain fecal coliform bacteria, which can spread diseases like Giardia, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, causing serious illness in humans. Rain and water from melting snow flows across yards, dog parks, and other surfaces on its way to our water bodies, via our streets and storm drains.Be a responsible pet owner and clean up your pet’s waste every time. Never dispose of pet waste in a catch basin, which flows directly into our waterways. Sullivan noted anyone who throws their dog waste bags into the town’s catch basins can be fined $300 per day by the Wilmington Department of Public Works and $300 per day by the Wilmington Board of Health.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Slow internet likely till Thursday

first_imgUntitled-4The government is purchasing 40 gbps bandwidth from France to make up for temporary bandwidth scarcity but shortfall will still remain. The Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) is buying the bandwidth to address the gap between demand and supply, caused by the three-day interruption in the operation of the first submarine cable.During this shutdown, which began early Tuesday, the nation is set to experience a scarcity of 230 gpbs (giga byte per second) bandwidth. So, internet service providers say, internet speed will be slow although officials claim there will be no problem in connectivity. The second submarine cable (SEA-ME-WE-5) is contributing 110 gbps, but the country still has a scarcity of 80gpbs bandwidth, according official records. The month-long deal with France, done via US firm Cogent, costs the BSCCL $20,000 (Tk 1.6 million).”So ensuring uninterrupted internet will not be a problem,” said BSCCL managing director Mashiur Rahman. However, internet service providers say the speed of internet will be slower these three days. As a result, general users will suffer. IT organisations that depend on high-speed internet will suffer the most.”Internet is like oxygen nowadays. If the internet speed gets slowed down, it affects the whole day’s output. Most of the things we do, especially keeping in touch with the foreign clients, are reliant on online clouds,” said Shafiul Alam, chief executive officer of Blancer, an online marketplace.BSCCL data show, the country has a daily demand of 470 gbps bandwidth. The two submarine cables contribute to 270 gbps while the remaining 200 are imported from India through International terrestrial cable (ITC).*The article, originally published in Prothom Alo print edition, has been rewritten in English by Quamrul Hassan.last_img read more

Suspended HISD Chief Auditor Back To Work

first_img Share The chief auditor for the Houston Independent School District has been ordered back to work, five months after he was abruptly suspended. In March, HISD informed Richard Patton that he was being suspended and reassigned to home duty for alleged “misconduct and other performance concerns.”HISD never gave an example or further explained his suspension. It came months after Patton questioned the district’s administration of its school construction projects and a massive budget shortfall of more than $200 million.Patton later filed a whistle-blower grievance, claiming he was retaliated against because he reported suspicious activity to law enforcement officers. Now HISD says in a statement that it “has resolved the issues related to his temporary reassignment.” He’s been directed back to duty as chief auditor, effective Wednesday.last_img read more

5 Dead As SUV Chased By Border Patrol Crashes In South Texas

first_imgPhoto via APIn this image tweeted by David Caltabiano of KABB/WOAI, a heavily damaged SUV is seen on Texas Highway 85 in Big Wells, Texas, after crashing while carrying more than a dozen people fleeing from Border Patrol agents, Sunday, June 17, 2018.At least five people were killed and several others hurt Sunday as an SUV carrying more than a dozen people during a suspected “smuggling event” crashed while fleeing from Border Patrol agents in South Texas, authorities said. The SUV carrying 14 people went out of control at more than 100 mph and overturned on Texas Highway 85, ejecting most of the occupants, Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd said.“From what we can tell the vehicle ran off the road and caught gravel and then tried to recorrect,” Boyd said, adding that “caused the vehicle to turn over several times.”Four victims were dead at the scene, Boyd said. He said at least one and possibly two others died at a hospital. The Border Patrol said in a statement Sunday night that two other vehicles had been traveling alongside the SUV earlier in the day. An agent suspected they were conducting a “smuggling event,” according to the statement, which did not elaborate. The border agent stopped one of the vehicles and another agent stopped a second one. Multiple people from both vehicles were arrested. The third vehicle kept going when agents encountered it, and a sheriff’s deputy took over the chase prior to the fatal crash, the border patrol said. The incident comes amid heightened tensions over the treatment of immigrants at the southern border. The Trump administration has said tougher immigration policies — even separating children from their parents — are needed to deter immigrants from coming to the country illegally. Over a six-week period ending in May, about 2,000 children had been separated from their families, administration officials said Friday. Most of the occupants in the SUV were believed in the country without legal permission. Boyd said the driver and one passenger were believed to be U.S. citizens. The driver was among those hospitalized, and a deputy who assisted the Border Patrol with the chase found the driver sitting upright in his seat and took him and the passenger into custody.“This, I think, is a perfect example, of why are borders need to be secured,” Boyd said. Some injured were taken by helicopter to San Antonio, about 90 miles (144.83 kilometers) northeast. Dimmit County is directly north of Webb County and east of Maverick County, which border Mexico.“Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of those who died in the crash,” The Border Patrol said in the statement. What You Need to Know About Digital Wallets

first_img Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Register Now » This story appears in the March 2013 issue of . Subscribe » Q: What is a digital wallet, and how will it impact my business?A: A digital wallet is an app that works as a secure digital container to store the information consumers carry around in their wallets or purses, such as credit and debit cards, ID, driver’s license, coupons, receipts, concert tickets and even airline boarding passes. When accessed by a POS terminal or other device, the digital wallet serves up the requested information and completes a transaction.Digital wallets usually take the form of a smartphone app. They’re always on hand, connected to the internet and make it easy for coupons, deals and more to show up on the user’s device–sometimes based solely on current location. Is it time for more small businesses to start accepting payments via digital wallet? “Yes, but thoughtfully,” says Aditya Khurjekar, a mobile-commerce expert who co-founded Money2020, a conference on emerging payments and financial services. He points out that the question of whether to work with digital wallets is akin to the decision businesses had to make 40 years ago about whether to accept credit cards. Because consumers wanted the convenience of cards, businesses had to determine if they wanted to pay the associated costs and, if so, which cards they would accept.Similarly, businesses today need to determine which digital wallet vendor is best for their bottom line. Khurjekar recommends starting with the payments and financial service providers with whom you already have relationships. But keep in mind that consumers will be the ultimate judge of which digital wallet providers win in the long term and which fall out of favor. (Remember Diners Club?)Part of your decision will hinge on your customers’ preferences, especially in terms of security. The best way to find out is to ask them: “Are you comfortable with your payment information being stored on your phone (like it is on your credit or debit card)? Or would you rather use a system that stores your data in a cloud-based secure server, where your smartphone is just a conduit to access the account?”Secure wallets like the one offered by Isis, for instance, store payment information directly on the smartphone, unlike cloud-based wallets from PayPal and Square.Khurjekar admits that whichever digital wallet solution you pick has a real possibility of leaving some customers on the outside looking in. Right now the burgeoning scene is like the Wild West. But going back to the example of the nascent credit card industry, he expects that consumers will likely encounter rebranding of their digital wallets as the first wave of providers merge, get acquired or fall by the wayside. Facebook releases DeepFocus an AIpowered rendering system to make virtual reality more

first_imgFacebook released a new “AI-powered rendering system”, called DeepFocus yesterday, that works with Half Dome, a special prototype headset that Facebook’s Reality Lab (FRL) team had been working on over the past three years. HalfDome is an example of a “varifocal” head-mounted display (HMD) that comprises eye-tracking camera systems, wide-field-of-view optics, and adjustable display lenses that move forward and backward to match your eye movements. This makes the VR experience a lot more comfortable, natural, and immersive. However, HalfDome needs software to work in its full potential, that is where DeepFocus comes into the picture. “Our eyes are like tiny cameras: When they focus on a given object, the parts of the scene that are at a different depth look blurry. Those blurry regions help our visual system make sense of the three-dimensional structure of the world and help us decide where to focus our eyes next. While varifocal VR headsets can deliver a crisp image anywhere the viewer looks, DeepFocus allows us to render the rest of the scene just the way it looks in the real world: naturally blurry,” mentions Marina Zannoli, a vision scientist at FRL. Facebook is also open-sourcing DeepFocus, making the system’s code and the data set used to train it available to help other VR researchers incorporate it into their work. “By making our DeepFocus source and training data available, we’ve provided a framework not just for engineers developing new VR systems, but also for vision scientists and other researchers studying long-standing perceptual questions,” say the researchers. DeepFocus A research paper presented at SIGGRAPH Asia 2018 explains that DeepFocus is a unified rendering and optimization framework based on convolutional neural networks that solve a full range of computational tasks. It also helps with enabling real-time operation of accommodation-supporting HMDs. The CNN comprises “volume-preserving” interleaving layers that help it quickly figure out the high-level features within an image. For instance, the paper mentions, that it accurately synthesizes defocus blur, focal stacks, multilayer decompositions, and multiview imagery. Moreover, it makes use of only commonly available RGB-D images, that enable real-time, near-correct depictions of a retinal blur. Researchers explain that DeepFocus is  “tailored to support real-time image synthesis..and ..includes volume-preserving interleaving layers..to reduce the spatial dimensions of the input, while fully preserving image details, allowing for significantly improved runtimes”. This model is more efficient unlike the traditional AI systems used for deep learning based image analysis as DeepFocus can process the visuals while preserving the ultrasharp image resolutions that are necessary for delivering high-quality VR experience. The researchers mention that DeepFocus can also grasp complex image effects and relations that includes foreground and background defocusing. However, DeepFocus isn’t just limited to Oculus HMDs. Since DeepFocus supports high-quality image synthesis for multifocal and light-field display, it is applicable to a complete range of next-gen head-mounted display technologies. “DeepFocus may have provided the last piece of the puzzle for rendering real-time blur, but the cutting-edge research that our system will power is only just beginning”, say the researchers.
