Petrides announces new measures to help disabled

first_imgInterior Minister Constantinos Petrides on Friday decided to meet the demands of the Cyprus Paraplegic Organisation, such as the introduction of new arrangements regarding the employment of foreign domestic workers and accessibility to electoral booths. In his announcement, Petrides said new contracts with domestic workers are necessary as the disabled need more personal care than other people and the employees will also get paid more. This is a measure which protects people with disabilities, as so far employees often denounced their employers for having them perform tasks which are not in their contract, even if those may have been verbally agreed upon. This meant that the disabled were victimised as their domestic help could take advantage of a gap in the contract to leave their employers and work elsewhere. An amendment to the existing legislation will mean that the costs for the employment of personal assistants or domestic workers by paraplegics will be covered by the government, as they are not a luxury but a need. The paraplegic organisation has long said that there is a problem with voting during elections as the ledge in the booths where voters fill in their slips were positioned too high to be easily accessible for people with wheelchairs and asked that wider ledges should be placed at polling stations to ensure that people with disabilities can take advantage of their electoral rights. To remedy this, as a start, 200 special booths will be placed in the polling stations in time for the next elections. At the same time, the interior ministry will ask all person with disabilities who want to vote to electronically submit which polling stations they use so that they can gradually upgrade the facilities needed.A statement issued by the paraplegic organisation after the announcement expressed their satisfaction and applauded the understanding of the interior minister. You May LikeFigLeaf Beta AppHow to Become Fully Anonymous Online in Less Than 3 Minutes?
